Per the Alabama Secretary of State's website, overall turnout for Tuesday's primaries was about 24 percent -- a *slight* improvement over 2014's primary numbers but well below the 40 percent who came out for the U.S. Senate election last December. A total of 809,774 ballots cast.

Both parties saw increases in gubernatorial vote totals. 547,578 ballots were cast in the Republican primary, an increase of about 26 percent over 2014. On the Democratic side, 238,202 ballots were cast, an increase of about 32 percent.

Another quick note: Primary turnout is not necessarily a sign of general election performance. In 1986, more than 900K people voted in the Democratic primary against less than 30K in the GOP; Republican Guy Hunt won that November thanks to Democratic implosion.

Say more about "Dem implosion," any parallels to present day centrist/progressive tension?
