I aced the SATs too, but college was a rude awakening. It turned out that I wasn't a hard worker—I was just good at taking tests. I loved Stuy, going there opened so many doors for me. It got me out of Queens and broadened my horizons.

I'd think "surely they can offer more test prep," or have a lower cutoff for kids from lower income districts. I wanted other people *like me* to have the same opportunity. But nothing ever changed and it kept getting worse.

*"like me" meaning Chinese, lower-middle class, not particularly hard-working.

There are real, serious struggles that Asian Americans face. But it's also important to admit and call out that Chinese people can be really fucking racist. For me, this Coalition of A.A. for Civil Rights was the last straw.https://twitter.com/SoapboxO/status/1003741283628789767 …

These folks also reminded me of the last time I felt so ashamed to be Chinese: the protest against a homeless shelter a few years back: "One [Chinese] child held up a sign saying "2, 4, 6, 8, who do we NOT appreciate, hobos hobos hobos." http://dnain.fo/1CVsAXMalso
