I think Clojure should be easier to use for beginners. But I'm skeptical this is the root problem because JS has become very hard to set up for beginners. Yet JS usage continues to grow--and get more difficult. Perceived value trumps ease-of-use.

I'm sure there's also something about always being able to get help. There's always someone who ran into exactly the same problem setting things up as you.

Agree, but I think the biggest bottleneck is at the top of the funnel. Would be interesting to see conversion rate for clj(s) though.

Definitely word of mouth (from my own experience). I actually told a friend of mine that Clojure would be excellent for beginners, especially people who don't yet know any particular language
