I don’t understand the argument that manual transmissions increase driver engagement which increases safety. If having to maintain the correct gear increases safety, why not add other arbitrary requirements like “solve a Sudoku puzzle every 5 minutes or the car will crash”?

I'd be willing to bet that in city driving drivers of manual cars multitask less (latte sipping, texting, ...), as you need both your hands more often.
