New emails released from UCLA public records show more signs of serious malfeasance. 1/

These emails are now making the rounds, thanks to et al.
They reveal a whole host of problems around how the CMF was developed, and the undue influence that was exerted to change UC admissions. 2/

Our team has added more detail about concerning aspects of the second field review draft.
It denies the importance of teaching to and testing students around their mastery of well-established and objective math content standards. 3/

It shifts the balance away from teaching material in detail with direct instruction and relies wholly on student self-discovery of mathematics through exploratory activities and group discussions.
Discussions center around what students think, not what they need to know. 4/

The framework's authors claim that it's more important to build "positive math identities" via engaging activities that convey only vague notions of "big ideas" and have students grapple with the notion that "math is hard," rather than building and facilitating proficiency. 5/

And they misrepresent the research they've tried to cherry-pick to justify their claim that what they're proposing actually works.
They make false claims that aren't supported by the research they cite, repeatedly refer to their own, biased work, and omit conflicting studies. 6/

The one pilot program where they attempted to put this program into effect, at SFUSD, had very poor results.

Our heterodox group holds a range of political perspectives, but we all agree that the proposals in this CA Math Framework will lead to harm all across the board.
They will widen the achievement gap, fail our STEM students, and hinder the actual learning of math. 9/

The UCLA emails also reveal the lengths that went to in her attempt to subvert Algebra II and replace it with a Data Science course that is devoid of essential math content.

She has been inappropriately attacking Algebra II for years. 10/

just say your course requires Algebra II (even though it doesn't) to trick the UC into approving it without them checking the details. Then the CMF references this as a model course to replace Algebra II. Wow. All emails shared by @cheesemonkeysf at mediafire.com/file/6p9lhuwcn

The SBE public comment period runs through to May 16th, and the SBE will hold a meeting on May 18-19.
What happens in the next 2 weeks may very well determine whether or not the state adopts it in July. Do not let this one slip past us. Find out more and act while you can. /END
