    An ad doesn’t work just by virtue of being an “ad”. If it makes a persuasive argument, it works. But then it’s the argument that works — not “advertising”, which is just a method of distribution.

    If you want people to read, you create a culture where books are valued. Of course it’s the ideas that matter, but you can build rituals and signals to lead people to the ideas.

    I think this is extremely sensible and that fetishising books as sacred objects is a bit silly really. It’s the ideas that matter, not what they’re printed on.

    I've now taught a child to read, and later taught one to swim. Through the experiences I learnt that nobody "teaches" anyone anything. We lead them to the water of learning, but the drinking is done alone. At most we give them the present of a culture which values water or books.

    Video games are bad when they are unearned visceral entertainment. You get stimulation without a physical price. Even a rollercoaster takes bravery. Some games require learnt dexterity, or allow you to pit your mind against other humans, these are good.
