I just made my second blog post. This time on "Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension" -- emphasizing its connections to many different areas of math. Corrections, suggestions, comments are all very welcome.

I am sitting in a cafe totally stuck and wondering if I should go for a walk to get unstuck. But then it is pleasant outside and not raining — so I don’t know how effective the walk would be.

Here is another excerpt from the same book “Miscellany”. As inspiring today as when I first read these lines — perhaps as a grad student.

I was trying to bring some order to my bookshelves when I came across my copy of “Littlewood’s miscellany” and started browsing. I promise I am never going to complain about my teaching load again.

Of course, all this would be clearer if we were allowed to talk about dual spaces. But alas, while we can talk about the transpose of a matrix, we cannot interpret it as the matrix of the transpose of the original map.

But the fact that the "algorithm" for checking infectivity for a linear map given by a matrix is to check that all cols are pivotal, and for surjectivity that all rows are pivotal, seems to convey the same(-ish) idea. 2/2

I am teaching a mostly "no proofs" linear algebra for engineers. So there is no time to explain that injectivity and surjectivity are dual properties in terms of left/right cancellability or vanishing of kernel/cokernel. 1/2

Looking for (1) a summer intern and (2) a postdoc in my group for Topological Data Analysis on omics data. Email me if interested.

Dinner after the third edition of mini-conference on real algebraic geometry at Purdue on occasion of Marie-Francoise’s visit (this has now become an annual tradition).

We are organizing a Hot Topics Workshop at ICERM on "Symmetry, Randomness, and Computations in Real Algebraic Geometry", Aug 24 -28, 2020. Please consider applying and/or encourage your graduate students to apply. Some funding may be available.

Before I joined twitter last month JMM was just a big meeting at the most inconvenient time of the year. Now the constant updates is making me rue that I am missing out on a lot of fun and friends -- not to mention math :(

They don't know. They don't believe one can know. They don't believe there's anything to know. That's what makes physics so hard for mathematicians.

I resurrected my math blog and made my FIRST real blog post -- on "categorical complexity". Please feel free to comment on content, style and anything else that I should be aware of.

Spent the last month of a very busy semester understanding the nitty gritties of simplicial homotopy theory (model categories, Kan complexes, "calculus of fractions") for an applied topology project. Now I see that I don't need it. My student will be happy, me not so sure ...

Is it allowed to dream that someone, someday will improve this bound to match the corresponding effective result in the algebraically closed case -- namely, the singly exponential upper bound on the complexity of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz (by Kollar, Jelonek and others) ?
