ACM, IEEE, etc. - they all have codes of ethics for software developers, but the codes are toothless without an enforcement body - especially for developers from marginalized groups, for whom a job change is much riskier than for the white guys.

We, as an industry, _will not write ethical software_ until we remove the financial risk that accompanies acting ethically.

I have always hoped
@TheOfficialACM or@IEEEorg would turn into this organization, but they both seem pretty happy just publishing papers & running conferences. So maybe a union, rather than an industry governance body, is the best way to implement it.Show this thread

It is a really good idea... have you heard of organisations or people discussing the idea ? Unions are, or at least should, be ideal for that.
-
Connected to that, I have that gut feeling that we (citizens) could use law more agressively. At least in Europe
-
I don't know of any group thinking about this right now, besides the folks who are considering unionization. I always hoped the ACM or the IEEE would turn into that, but they both seem to be happy just publishing papers.

In some places, there's discussions about making software engineers regulated in the same way as other engineers.https://www.itnews.com.au/news/tech-and-telco-engineers-face-mandatory-vic-registration-rules-530342 …

I didn't expect this, but suddenly I'm faced with a vendor of a major configuration management ecosystem making unethical choices. I want to stand by my ethics, but that might mean quitting not only my client, but also my employer. Thoughts?
-
Ugh, that must be so frustrating! I don't think our industry is prepared to grapple with these things in a systematic way yet. Some companies have "ethical vendor" policies, but most don't. Plus it's not clear if/how those would apply to the use of 3rd party open source software
-
I wonder if you could start a conversation at your company about having an ethical vendor policy, as a start? I'm sorry you are having to deal with this - you're sorta on the front lines here!
-
I will try. I appreciate your sympathy; for sure, my prior experience has been that if I want change, I must force it, I must create the change i want to see by shear force of will and personality. I am... unaccustomed to affecting change by pleading for it. By arguing for it.

I think you (everyone) should take care of your savings. Not against the idea of unions though
