I was expecting a terrible non-apology from Stallman, but this is even worse than I thought it would be. #cancelstallmanhttps://twitter.com/theamyshim/status/1172946689553887232 …

Sarah, Pause for a moment. Irrespective of Richards actions, what is the intent here? Replace Richards name with your own, or one of children's. How would feel as the receiver and observer of such emotional vitriolic language? What will you do when Twitter comes for you?

You're right. If it was me or one of my kids, I'd want myself or them spared of this reaction and face no consequence. Then again, that's just "self-interest" and "nepotism". How do you think a little Billy or Susie behaves at work when everyone knows the boss is their daddy?

My sense is that we should support that individuals face consequences for bad actions even family members. The response to their actions however I feel should not be emotive or derogatory. Why? If we ourselves mirror the bad behavior, then surely we lessen the moral lesson.

I’m just calling it what it indisputably is: Abhorrent. Terrible. An ugly stain on free software that can never be fully removed. But we have to try, and that starts with removing him from every position of power he holds.

Understood. I see you as a force for good, you have driven awareness for change, and through that enabled change. You haven't tried you have succeeded. My worry was and remains that the emotive language being used in this context detracts from a powerful position and argument.

Consider that you might find the use of emotive language a detractor because you've been taught that emotions are bad, and that you've been taught that emotions are bad because they're 'female-coded'? Our rage is valid.

It's been an interesting week in tech twitter. Middle aged white dudes have not fared well. Many sounded very confused. Many told me 'I believe women' when they were told to 'believe women.' Then they argued with me. So dudes, when we say 'believe women' this is what we mean:

In all seriousness, I have that same concern, but in the opposite direction. Until we have firm consequences instead of easily-ignored words and unlimited second chances, these lines will always seem nice-but-optional to privileged people. Bullies have no qualms crossing them.

Yup. The whole problem here is that people have been too nice - for thirty years. More nice isn’t going to move the needle. Right now what everyone in this situation needs is to feel the REAL, AUTHENTIC anger that women have been suppressing around this asshole for DECADES.

So what specific actions do you propose and recommend? What reaction is to be taken if the action is not taken? Timeline? How do you channel the anger felt to enable change? If the change does not occur, what is to be done? Anger is powerful, but a plan more so.

Ok, a clearly defined action and immediate timeline is defined. Why the request? What specific actions or behaviors have caused this request to be made? If the request is not agreed and acted upon, what actions will be taken in response? The latter creates the focus for change.
