If one doesn't make an attempt at rationally debating a stance they find wrong, one's also likely to embolden regrettable or otherwise undesirable positions as a result of offering a weak counter.

So saying that rms is a monster for debating the wording of an article makes deniers of sexual assault claims stronger, on top of failing to disprove rms' point. Learning to talk to people with different, uncomfortable opinion is paramount to learn how to win them over.

And winning them over is important. 2016 taught us, if anything, that when you alienate a sizeable portion of the population, they're likely to turn to other venues of representation. If this is to change, we all need to learn to talk to each other and avoid knee jerk reactions.
