why i got lasik 13 years ago—was mugged and they ripped my glasses off my face as they yanked my phone out of my hand. tho it turns out taking my glasses activated berserker mode, and i went after them. they dropped the phone and threw my glasses in the street and ran.

i called the police because basically i was blind enough to not be able to make it the mile home where i had other glasses. cops drove by and didnt stop, and then yelled at me for not "flagging them down"... like i was just going to step in traffic to get to a fuzzy blue light.
-
anyway, someone eventually found my glasses under a car, and so i was able to make it home. i dont think the cops bothered to file the report because i guess assault is just not worth it. and then i got lazik so that wouldnt happen again.

I often train jiu jitsu with my eyes closed so I can learn to remain calm and use my other senses in a fight. (But I’d have surgery in a second if it could fix my vision issues.)

That's only one of many tactics to discourage resistance. I can only recommend (disclaimer: I taught self defense classes) to start regular self defense training. That will build up the confidence needed for such a situation. Self defense readiness requires training.
-
Just to add on top: I can't get lasik for my eyes. That's why I started to do my training completely without them. I really don't see much but enough to manage the situation.

My vision was so bad I didn’t qualify for lasik (not enough cornea would be left). I highly recommend cataract surgery. They insert the corrective lenses in your eye. I’ve got one for distance, one for close up. Never regretted it. And insurance covered it!

I had this same issue! They told me that my vision was so poor that I would likely still need glasses/contacts, “but it would be a lower prescription!” As if I cared to spend the time and money on lasik for merely a lower script! Thanks for the cataracts tip though!

It’s not perfect, but nearly so. If you do detailed work like embroidery, you’d need glasses for the finer work. I wear glasses when I drive at night and sometimes when I work on a computer, depending on where the monitor sits. Minor inconvenience.

My wife asked me why I train martial arts without my glasses and I mentioned this very fact that they likely wouldn’t stay on very long so I better get used to it

I used to have a bad astigmatism so that if I put my glasses down, I'd lose them. I wouldn't go camping or anywhere I'd have to take them off and I used to have nightmares that I'd be in a plane crash and end up like Piggy in Lord of the Flies. Getting lasik was liberating.

Contact sensitivity. I prefer wing chun but I’d expect grappling schools would also be an option. But Lasik also cool. Not an option for me.

Yep. Also bullies in schools tend to do that, kind of showoff of control and weakness of the target.
