Lots of interesting discussion around this. It seems like the underlying question is, “can you handle work stress or money stress more easily?” (thread)https://twitter.com/marthakelly/status/1125536070852960256 …

There were times in my past when I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to buy food or pay rent. Times when I saw no way out of credit card debt. Etc. Money has always been incredibly difficult & stressful for me.

When money was tight, if you’d offered me a big raise with twice the extra job stress - I’d have taken it no questions asked. When can I start?? Because I handle job stress waaaaay better than I handle money stress. Not coincidentally, I’m better at my job than I am at money.

But stress seems to come out of the same well. It’s just that money stress draws two buckets where equivalent work stress will draw one. So if I can lower my money stress, it’s like I can take on 4x more stress at work, if that makes sense. That’s just how my brain works.

Anyway I’m sure there are people out there who are champs at handling money without feeling like a failure, but who for whatever reason have a super hard time with work stress. They are probably going to answer this question differently than I do 😅

The interesting part, for me, is that it’s really hard to imagine how that would work. Like...I literally can’t imagine what it would feel like to be good with money. It’s stressful to me even when I have enough of it. It’s horrifically stressful when I don’t have enough.

Work stress can be handled more readily for me (not the case for all) than money stress. I can communicate, ask for help, etc to alleviate work stress - not so much with money.

Work stress is stress that just impacts me. I'll deal with it. Money stress impacts my whole family. I can handle hostile coworkers or looming deadlines if it means my family has secure housing and my kids outgrowing their shoes isn't a catastrophe.
