This is the biggest problem in the world, according to YC. As befits the title “moonshot,” it’s the most pressing problem we face. Hyperbole acknowledged, but venture capital firms generally don't look for the world's biggest problems, nor do they claim to. YC is no exception.
Using the word moonshot is explicitly making exactly that claim.

That's not my understanding of that word, but dictionaries as yet haven't caught up with us. To me moonshot= big R&D project, one that will require breakthrough tech. eg Apollo. Sincere thanks for the reply tho- at least I have a better sense of your original comment.

FWIW, here's the most apropos Urban Dictionary def, not that they R final authority: "awesome, fantastic, almost impossible to achieve, the best, the reason for success, reaching the highest point, right on target #awesome#fantastic#best#highest#target" I don't like it either.

I’ve only ever understood it to mean “ambitious with a high chance of failure”. That said, a few years ago they called for ideas for solving climate and water problems. I wish they’d do more of that.

Here's a defense of your understanding. The word AFAIK was coined by google. Wiki: "A moonshot is defined by X as the intersection of a big problem, a radical solution, and breakthrough technology." Gotta agree that the absence of a flying motorcycle isn't exactly a big problem.
