Hyperbole acknowledged, but venture capital firms generally don't look for the world's biggest problems, nor do they claim to. YC is no exception.

Using the word moonshot is explicitly making exactly that claim.

That's not my understanding of that word, but dictionaries as yet haven't caught up with us. To me moonshot= big R&D project, one that will require breakthrough tech. eg Apollo. Sincere thanks for the reply tho- at least I have a better sense of your original comment.

FWIW, here's the most apropos Urban Dictionary def, not that they R final authority: "awesome, fantastic, almost impossible to achieve, the best, the reason for success, reaching the highest point, right on target #awesome#fantastic#best#highest#target" I don't like it either.

I’ve only ever understood it to mean “ambitious with a high chance of failure”. That said, a few years ago they called for ideas for solving climate and water problems. I wish they’d do more of that.

There's nothing sadder in Silicon Valley than seeing people upset about traffic and concluding that the right thing to work on is flying transportation

They’ve funded cheap food startups & cheap housing startups, as well as non-profits & policy research on stuff like UBI. If they also fund flying motorcycles that seems ok to me. I hope they make bank and that helps them do more of the other stuff.

That is a many-layered onion of "why?" At the center of it, I suspect, is the question of why you'd want the people who already can't manage themselves on the 101 operating in three dimensions.

Isn’t it TechCrunch that called it a “moonshot”, not YC? The article has a quote from YC partner that says he can’t imagine people not getting excited... but that’s still not characterizing jet packs as the biggest problem in the world

To be fair, we also had a lot of hunger, poverty and disease 57 years ago, when we decided it was really important to send tourists to the moon before the soviets did.

Reducing the population is the solution to poverty
-
Self-driving cars and flying motorcycles may be the way we'll achieve that.
