When I registered for the exam I called the NBME to ask if they: had any scholarships for low SES students? “No.” Any resources on how to finance such an expensive exam with no income? “No.” Could I view a copy of the exam budget so I could see where my money was going? 2/x

I received a very diplomatic response with excellent financial vocabulary that superbly evaded the answer to my question. Would post a screenshot but unsure if that would breech some confidentiality. What can we gather from this? The NBME does not care about med students. 3/x

I’ll only briefly address the exam’s utility as this has been excellently explained by others before - namely
@jbcarmody . My 2 cents: the scenarios portrayed by actors are laughable attempts at simulating real clinical medicine. After 4 yrs of training, it’s offensive. 4/xPrikaži ovu nit -
Anyways - back to the financial scamming of med students. Lest we forget that the NBME is a 501c3 org - meaning they have non-profit status and their revenue is NOT subject to federal taxes. Tax records are available to the public & here are the important takeaways: 5/x

1. In 2018 USMLE fees raked in $112,950,927. They do not pay taxes on this revenue - doesn’t include $$ from NBME exams/practice exams. 2. Executives make HEFTY 6 figure salaries. 3. The president and other employees fly first class! This doesn’t sit right with me. 6/x

I don’t know what we as med students can do about this, which is what’s most disheartening. But I’m def sick and tired of forced subservience to an org that financially abuses us. Eager to see how I can change the system as I grow in my career, because this is not okay. 7/7

Look at your score breakdowns. Clinical content laughably simple compared to other tests. I and all my (native speaking) classmates fared most poorly on communication. Why? CS is a racist screen intended to make it harder for non-native speakers to enter our work pool.

Walking out and wondering what all the fuss was about, I heard two other MSs behind me saying how difficult it was. Thinking it was a joke I turned around and realized both were non-native speakers - their struggle was to get the details in the time allotted due to language.
