I also feel quite strongly that the internet helped me create *better* friendships: even in high school, the people I eventually ended up befriending were ones I'd met through eg Myspace first, then we started hanging out.

Most of those friendships survived, I guess because we had so much in common and had actually chosen to be friends, while the friendships I made at school just because we happened to be in the same school fizzled out once we lost that thing we had in common.

Not to be needlessly mean but I'm also often struck by how incredibly dull people's old uni mates are, and what the people have in common that's not alcohol & memories. I feel lucky that I got to, and still get to build stronger friendships based on deeper affinities.
