The flaw with this argument is that season 1 of The Good Place was good but the twist at the end was very bad and since then it hasn’t been anywhere near as good.

I do agree it's less good - but I think the show's ability to reinvent itself gives us an idea of how tired concepts can be rejuvenated

Yes I do agree with that - even if we can disagree on whether The Good Place does it well you’re right that it keeps things going. I wouldn’t have wanted another series with S1’s premise anyway.

(I think my problem with the twist was that it put the characters at the centre of the universe instead of being arbitrary victims of fate, and I just didn’t like them enough to want the universe to care about them.)

Tbf, I kind of agree. I think it's conceptually interesting with quite uninspiring characters
