Men thinking they're clever for noticing I'm foreign: *creepy smile* *wagging finger* “now... I detect an accent!” No shit you do, buddy. We’re in Scotland and I'm from fucking Ohio

Pretty sure some of them are trying to be polite and not guessing what part of North America you are from. Asking a Canadian if they are a Yank is pretty much a no-no. But creepy smiles and wagging fingers are never a good idea unless you are playing a witch in a panto.

It's not polite, it's patronising. Saying 'Where are you from?' or 'You sound like you're from North America!' is absolutely fine. This is a classic middle-aged male tactic and it's grating.

It can be a bit aggressive to ask "Where are you from" if they literally have just started conversing. Comes off very UKIP. By asking about the accent it can show they are interested without looking like they wish to discuss the quickest way to deport you.

as someone who has been in this situation countless times, I can assure you, a) does not sound aggressive and most normal people do it and b) the only people who do it in the way I described are patronising men.
