I really like Hugo Rifkind and his writing (and even this piece, largely), but it’s worth clarifying this stat (which is pretty well know): yes, men do successfully commit suicide more often than women, but women attempt it far morehttps://twitter.com/hugorifkind/status/945755524297093121 …

Thanks very much Sarah, and I did not know that. Will read up. Out of interest, is that based on hospital admissions or self-reporting?

It seems like the NHS stats are self-reported. This references a pretty good number of studies: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/jan/21/suicide-gender-men-women-mental-health-nick-clegg …

Thanks, yes, I saw that. The death figures for men being *so* much higher is striking, though. I would wonder if men under-report, although I daresay the researchers considered that.

Yeah, and this is why I generally did really enjoy your article. Definitely striking, it’s just frustrating to repeatedly see mental disorders branded as an issue that affects men more than women.

Oh Christ, I'm sorry if that was the impression given because that's very obviously not the case in almost everything other than suicide. It was more about the way that struggling men make themselves harder to sympathise with, and society's response tend's to be a shrug.

FWIW, sympathy with both participants. Have experience with MH issues and 'typically male' responses & mate took his own life in July. But recognise pressures on young women & MH are not getting same traction. @EveVHepburn is working on latter with @FearlessFemme.
