I think there are better ways to teach future generations about slave traders than erecting enormous fucking monuments in their honourhttps://twitter.com/francesweetman/status/1269645909681455105 …

I can understand why they're doing this, but I err towards thinking this is a bad idea. Memorials to figures such as this can be used to educate future generations on exactly what went wrong and why. It's part of the story of the evolution of our society. https://twitter.com/_jackgrey/status/1269625428400132096 …

Where have I suggested or supported putting up monuments?

Where you say you err on the side of thinking tearing down this one is a bad idea? And where you say memorials can help teach people directly after that?

Imo I would simply not criticise people for tearing down a monument of a man who was made famous by literally buying and selling black people

Is not knocking a statue down the same as wanting to put one up, Sarah?

I would argue, Frances, that defending keeping up a statue of a man made famous for slave trade isn’t much better

I did! Not the same, but it’s very revealing that you think one is significantly better

Again, I haven't stated that. Is your reporting this sloppy? I said I err on the side of thinking it's a bad idea, I haven't said I think it's the worst thing in the world and I wrote this with what I thought was clearly a sceptical tone, indicating I might be wrong.

What do you hope people get out of your statement? You say you err towards thinking it’s a bad idea because future generations could learn from it. I posit that I disagree, and that erecting statues to slave traders is DEFINITELY bad and taking them down is DEFINITELY good

Again, that's also not what you said. You said *erecting* monuments to educate was bad, and I'd never suggested it was good. I agree with you that erecting statues to slave traders is bad, and I honestly find it abhorrent you've tried to suggest I think otherwise.
