The Epoch Times, a pro-Trump outlet popular among the alt-right in Europe and the US, has begun to target UK councillors, and other politicians, with coronavirus conspiracy theories https://www.newstatesman.com/science-tech/internet/2020/04/councillors-politicians-uk-trump-conspiracy-theory-outlet-epoch-times-coronavirus …

Councillors started receiving emails from mid-April, hitting whole councils in Bradford, West Sussex, London, and Wigan + more. In Scotland, several MSPs reported receiving newsletters on "the truth about coronavirus" – all of whom deny ever signing uphttps://www.newstatesman.com/science-tech/internet/2020/04/councillors-politicians-uk-trump-conspiracy-theory-outlet-epoch-times-coronavirus …

Worth saying that even more councillors have been in touch, not just to say that they're getting email from The Epoch Times, but also that they're getting strange emails from alleged constituents citing the publication and repeating its viewpointshttps://www.newstatesman.com/science-tech/internet/2020/04/councillors-politicians-uk-trump-conspiracy-theory-outlet-epoch-times-coronavirus …

The bit at the end about their likely not having signed up to the epoch times is worrying. Do wonder if it might result in action under GDPR or something related if they're found to have been accessing email addresses without permission.

i think with councillors you can say it's of public interest and then that means it's okay under gdpr. but yes, totally worrying!

I got an email about this (councillor in Colchester) and deleted it for being obviously cranky.

Can't imagine it'll be remotely successful this side of the pond but still ominous

It's an FLG paper that's been around for much longer than Trump has been in politics - it's primarily FLG rather than pro-Trump

Genuinely worrying how much we’re seeing a ramping up of anti-China conspiracy theories and hatred

Seems they’re now sending out propaganda directly to UK households. This was delivered via Royal Mail this morning.pic.twitter.com/x1nQuqcVc8
