I mean they quite literally cannot remove it as things stand, and taking away end-to-end encryption would result in Facebook being able to read your messages which personally makes me very uncomfortable. I'd 100% stop using WhatsApp at that point (already use Signal and Telegram)

I totally get this point! But my opinion is that a) it's more important to remove this stuff during this pandemic rn and b) most people using WhatsApp don't really think about that part of it.
