I wrote about the absolute mess that was the Yorkshire Tea "clapback" this week and the insidious business of stanning brands at the expense of a normal personhttps://www.newstatesman.com/science-tech/social-media/2020/02/yorkshire-tea-viral-clapback-shows-danger-celebrating-brands-sue-youre-shouting …

Found this absolutely horrendous. They laughed and joked with other accounts about it, just fueling the whole thing. People who run big accounts need to be aware of the power imbalances and harm they can cause. As they said themselves, it was tough just as a brand account.
-
The fact that they did it off the back of a thread talking about how hard it was dealing with abuse made it even worse.

Thinking of the probably not overpaid worker responding to a barrage of daft tweets. Allowed to have their moments too.

Hello Sarah, I do get the point of your piece but Sue's comments shouldn't have been ignored because brands (jobs) too (apart from the handler) can get hurt by false narratives. I doubt that the intention was to open Sue to attacks, but yes, perhaps they should have deleted

It's an interesting piece. The premise of the line 'you're shouting at tea' is disingenuous - when you send feedback to any firm's customer service rep you assume it's going to a department that's equipped to deal with it. A Twitter account is also legit that. But

If it happened to me, both the tea and its followers would get wrecked.

This is silly. Both Sue and Yorkshire Tea wield exactly the same amount of power and control over their online experience - they’re both blessed with one delete button each Castigating YT for not taking the delete option, but not Sue, leaves your argument fatally unbalanced

Sue couldn't delete the post they tagged her in. Nice substitution of both-siding for thought
