I think my main worry is leaving it alone 10-12 hours a day. My flat is of decent size, but still... How often is Martha left alone?
yeah you can't leave it for that long sadly. but many dogs have dog walkers that pick them up for a 2-3 hour stroll in the middle of the day! and in that case it's fine

Yeah that's the problem. I can work from home and have a dog friendly office but still, full-time office job while single isn't conducive to dog ownership :( Might get a turtle.
