I just had a really jarring experience that I’m cautious to tweet about because I fear it’ll hurt my career but I’m going to share it anyway

I went on 5 Live to talk about the CCHQ fake fact checking stuff based on the fact that I have *expertise* in internet culture and the dissemination of disinformation online and wrote about it in this piece last nighthttps://www.newstatesman.com/politics/elections/2019/11/tories-conservative-party-cchq-factcheckuk-just-used-disinformation-trick-could-get-them-blocked-twitter …

After a series of questions about it, the (male) presenter asked why anyone should care because politicians have been lying for years. And then — THEN — implied I may not know that fact (and that I only care about this issue because it’s on social media) because I’m too young

The direct quote: “speak to a few people older than you and you will see that politicians have been fabricating things for decades, it’s just it’s now moving to newly available platforms”

I can’t describe how weird it is to be live on a programme I was asked to come on because of my expertise and be patronised like this. If I was a white man, this wouldn’t have happened

Not a lot of people write about what I write about and everyone in this field works really hard to show how serious this stuff can be. It’s defeating to have mainstream broadcasters feign interest by inviting you on and then show absolutely no respect for you or your work

I came here to write exactly this. If you’re not angry then there’s something wrong, we should ALL be angry at the flagrant lies and abuse of campaigning. Of the institutional ducking dishonesty that everyone seems to accept in politics.

Just listened back to this. His line of questioning was actually astounding. Underplaying an attempt by the ruling party to intentionally deceive the public during an election is dangerous and sets a frightening precedent. You handled it superbly. Well done. 👍🏼
