As good as the article is, it does seem to conflate shitposting with trolling (another term political people have trouble with). Otherwise it's bang on the money about people needing to understand these terms better.

Tying shitposting to terrorism this explicitly is bad, actually.

Yeah I should have phrased that better, but I'm more talking generally about people knowing what these terms mean and are. The tying of shitposting to terrorism explicitly is bad.

hi! I don't think I do that – I'm saying that to understand places online where radicalisation happens, you have to understand this language. Shitposting is part of that. Surely you agree?

Of course understanding online jargon is important for the narrow goal of understanding online radicalisation, but shitposting isn't "part of that" in the sense that it is solely in the context of online radicalisation

Replying to @TKispeter @sarahmanavis and
All kinds of people use shitposting and more broadly memes (of which shitpost is actually a part / genre) for all kinds of purposes

yes and i say that! but i think where the bbc getting it wrong is *important* is that it makes online spaces even more difficult for non-online people to understand

Maybe my reading of your piece is unfair, but I got the distinct impression that were I not familiar with shitposts, calling something one should carry the weight of "this is probably linked to the alt right and terrorism"

the first thing I say is that shitposting is simply posting surrealist bullshit online and include the example from alex hern of just tweeting "joris bohnson". the reason why that's not the heavy focus is that i'm trying to illustrate why it's important to not just go "who cares"

I understand, and I guess fair enough. You work under constraints of space and word count and all of that, it can't really be a dissertation of the rainbow spectrum of shitposts. I just worry that your piece, even with the inclusion of Joris Bohnson, can give the wrong impression

No and I actually really appreciate the feedback and your willingness to engage on me. I stand by it, but it definitely makes me more cautious going forward which is healthy for literally everyone writing about this stuff. Genuinely appreciate it.

I appriciate you engaging with me! You are the journo in this conversation, I just tweet shit on the interwebs.

Honestly I think anyone who spends any considerable amount of time on this shit or in these spaces has a valid opinion, so thank you!
