We need more reporting on online spaces that are prone to radicalisation and to do that well, you need to understand the basics of this stuff. So when you have big journalists getting things this wrong, it makes things more difficult and even more opaquehttps://www.newstatesman.com/politics/media/2019/11/what-is-shitposting-and-why-does-it-matter-bbc-brexitcast-laura-kuenssberg-got-it-wrong …

Also: Most shitposting is meaningless and fun! Most of it isn't that deep! But the BBC of all places should take getting this right seriously because in some cases, it does actually matterhttps://www.newstatesman.com/politics/media/2019/11/what-is-shitposting-and-why-does-it-matter-bbc-brexitcast-laura-kuenssberg-got-it-wrong …

It's worth saying that there are shitloads of people who could explain internet language and its effect election even *at* the BBC. Why they didn't get one of them, or even ask them for help/clarification before doing this segment, is baffling to mehttps://www.newstatesman.com/politics/media/2019/11/what-is-shitposting-and-why-does-it-matter-bbc-brexitcast-laura-kuenssberg-got-it-wrong …

The BBC's response of effectively doing "im not owned! im not owned!" and doubling down on this is also super disappointing! They should just get someone to do a real explainer on the next episode of Brexitcast and admit they fucked up

And as I should have pointed out in the piece but have discussed with people since: how does the BBC's media editor not know what a shitpost is and why is he having it *explained to him* by the political editor?

I like this piece Sarah but I'm interested in the distinction you draw towards the end between this and commentary on 'traditional' politics. Is there a traditional politics left that doesn't intersect with Online?

I guess what I mean is that we don't need to throw into question everything LK talks about with things such as what's happening in Brussels or what is going to be in the manifestos or who is best posed to win which seat etc

I think I make that point early on! I say shitposting can just be posting random bullshit shared online before I get into anything else. The point is that by obscuring online terminology entirely, it helps to obscure the more serious stuff. Not that all shitposting is evil
