I feel a bit hesitant to post about this bc I probably should have been looking into it months ago. But like what are you supposed to do when you get a letter from your council saying "You're registered to vote! If there's an election before June 6, you'll receive a polling card"

Nah, that "should" is bollocks. How are you supposed to detect the absence of a polling card? They did you dirty.
