I know we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, but I don’t know how you can look at Milo and still argue that “platforming and beating in debate” is more powerful than de-platforming

I didn’t expect this to go nuts but I’m on holiday visiting my mom who lives on a different continent so I’m going to mostly stop replying. I‘d like to add that I write about this for a living so if you’re about to reply explaining social media/online radicalisation to me: don’t

I don't think there's much doubt that de-platforming can be a powerful way to silence people, the hard question is when/whether we should seek to silence people (albeit not that hard in Milo's case).

I am sadly on holiday and not prepared to engage in a twitter debate about whether or not racists should be allowed to shitpost on Facebook

I think that’s a good argument, but places the power almost entirely with social media platforms - basically until YouTube ban them I think exposing their hypocrisy is a good move.

Yes! I write about this for a living. But television is still powerful tool in and of itself and doubly powerful when it becomes a ready made video for social mediahttps://twitter.com/sarahmanavis/status/1126835204381970434?s=21 …

I think while he himself may not, his followers will heavily edit it and very much will - a culture that is under-handedly encouraged by figures like Shapiro

Can't be absolutely reasoned. Affect (and not a little history) suggests that if push came to shove, today's neoconservative curators of free speech would be the first to deny it to others.

Because de-platforming made him a sensation and famous in countries around the world. It was what he said that finished him. He was beaten by free speech.
