The thing is I see this type of call out all the time at the minute. Journalists put out #journorequest & within them say ‘but I mostly want to hear from minority voices’ Which is great but ‘minority voices’ want to write their own stories too.
Hi momtaz, totally get this. Only issue is that my beat is the internet! So when I say online spaces I mean that I have to write about things happening online. I don’t mean to imply that I wouldn’t go out and do the reporting in those irl communities.

It’s complex too like there are so many cultural unknowns and misconceptions. I replied to a request looking for BAME travel writer then they said write about your childhood holidays and I was like I’m Bangladeshi we didn’t go on holidays but then they wouldn’t know that.

Ugh that sucks. I do think editors in general should be spending more time developing relationships with writers where they don’t go “we need a person of colour to write about x” but instead go “what would you like to write about?” And say yes to whatever the they respond with

You are a most excellent researcher so maybe then it’s following & keeping up to date with the conversations going on in communities you want to know more about. It has been on my mind though the call out is so common now mostly from nationals which is good & bad at same time
