I’m giving a careers talk on journalism at my old uni today. Any suggestions of good advice for wannabe journalists? What do people wish they’d been told whilst still a student?

yep. i started writing online when i was 16, personally. writing paid listicles. built a v small following with a blog, and by engaging w/ people on twitter. everyone i know in the industry i know from twitter, and 9 times out of 10 my accepted pitches are comissioned by mutuals

so after 6 years of freelancing on the side, i'm only just starting to get more accepted cold pitches. it's work - but it's possible! start by working with smaller organisations you BELIEVE in. my only other tip is that editors from the states seem more open to cold pitching
