I’m giving a careers talk on journalism at my old uni today. Any suggestions of good advice for wannabe journalists? What do people wish they’d been told whilst still a student?

Did you post articles in other places beforehand? To showcase your work.
no! i had only ever written for my student paper before i got commissioned. and pretty much ALL of the times i did, it was because i was either talking to an editor on twitter, or a writer on twitter flagged my pitch to an editor at their publication

Brilliant. Smart moves. I've always kind of wanted to be a writer, but never put proper effort in to make it happen.

i was talking with my mom about this the other night. she was like "i know you would say you've only been trying to do this for a couple of years, but you've wanted this since you were five" so if you want to do it: try to do it. just make sure you can keep paying your bills!
