I’m giving a careers talk on journalism at my old uni today. Any suggestions of good advice for wannabe journalists? What do people wish they’d been told whilst still a student?

*SIGH* .....use Twitter. Don’t spam editors, but engage with them when you actually have something of value/funny to say. I had no connections in the UK and without twitter I’m not sure I would have been commissioned as early in my career as I was, if at all.
Pitching is hard! If you have an editor as a mutual on twitter it’s easier to convince them to commission your work than a cold pitch.

social media truly is The Great Equaliser, which means that if you're not a middle class white cis straight person who's dad was an editor at the FT you have a better chance that an editor will pay attention to your pitch instead of being 1/500 random emails they get a day
