The big change is that Archive of Our Own is now one of the public faces of fanfic, is full of gay fic, and makes it easy to compile statistics on shipping. The temples of het, Wattpad and http://Fanfiction.net , make that very difficult, skewing perceptions.

You know, it's an interesting article, but the truth is that most fanfic is het. Wattpad is mostly 1D guy/original female self insert character. There's way more of that than Larry. Draco/Ginny was pretty popular, but Hermione het ships were the huge ones.

I love your overall point though. It's absolutely true that yet another subculture is being cherry picked, and the most "mainstream" parts are breaking out while the rest are not.
