      But I think the “normal practice to meet the guy” is where I take issue. And I think it’s not that weird (if they are estranged) to have had little involvement up til now.

      I cut mine off, and then he died, and as the eldest child I had to do all the legal etc stuff and deal with his toxic brother. Still the right decision

      like, my dad and i talk now, but that was after years and he's still a terrible father and our relationship is uncomfortable to say the least. i have zero regrets and would cut off that relationship again if it got any worse than it is now

      The final straw was him banging for two hours on my mum’s door to try to get me and my sister to talk to him. Neither of us lived there at the time, I lived in London. Safety beats family

      yes! like honestly, i feel like the vast majority estrangements happen because of literal danger? like mine was weird because it was just predominantly emotional/verbal abuse (although my mom still has a restraining order)
