I came across this tweet in isolation and with zero context and thought it was an abstract reflection on gender, like... if a tree falls in a forest with nobody around, what gender is it, except I am the tree and I had many thoughts

Off topic (back on topic?) I had no idea people did this. Is it an American thing?

I don't know if it is, honestly! The practice usually stems from a concern of privacy, since there were some hacks where an unwanted party could watch the user through their webcam without their knowing, or just not wanting to accidentally flash everyone between zoom meetings
