Lukewarm take: Stories where the heroes prevent disaster are disappointing. I wanna see what happens when they fail. I wanna see that disaster play out.

Although I enjoy a good save the world story sometimes, I agree that there's something so meaty about seeing the hero fail in a spectacular fashion and having to climb back up out of the consequences. So much potential there.

I will compromise and say they can ultimately save the world so long as I get to see devastating tragedy first

That's the Avengers conclusion in a nutshell! That's what makes the first part of Endgame so impactful in my mind! The show finishes with a "Oh fuck" moment. I'd LOVE to play that!

That’s why it wad the only Avengers film that even mildly piqued my interest, but then they magically undid it all and I went straight on back to Normalise fictional tragedy lol

I guess what I’m thinking of is that big tragic moment in FF7R, or the first episode of AOT. It’s a massive tragedy, HUGE, but the fate of the world is still to play for. And I care more about the world now because I’ve seen what can happen.
