Lukewarm take: Stories where the heroes prevent disaster are disappointing. I wanna see what happens when they fail. I wanna see that disaster play out.

Although I enjoy a good save the world story sometimes, I agree that there's something so meaty about seeing the hero fail in a spectacular fashion and having to climb back up out of the consequences. So much potential there.
I will compromise and say they can ultimately save the world so long as I get to see devastating tragedy first

Yeah, totally. Another version is that the devastation happens and, though there's no going back, the survivors pull themselves together to try to rebuild in the aftermath.

That's the Avengers conclusion in a nutshell! That's what makes the first part of Endgame so impactful in my mind! The show finishes with a "Oh fuck" moment. I'd LOVE to play that!
