My biggest regret as a narrative designer is that I cut my teeth on the idea that I was the lowest common denominator in the development process, that my job was to do what had been done before, to be seen but not heard and tiptoe around superior disciplines.

If a game is story based then the narrative designer should be at the heart of the game design and only be limited by technical constraints. The clue is in the label "story based".

Maybe we need to define this term? I know of many games which I would not classify as story games which benefitted from incredible stories. IMO if a game is to have story, a storyteller should be present from the start to ensure that all parts are working cohesively.
