That attitude comes through in some of the talks I've done, and to this day I still struggle to stamp down the impulse to say "It's okay, don't worry about it, what I do is cheap, right?" Which does a disservice to me, to our game, and to others in the same role.

I guess I’m just kinda done with being underestimated. and ALLOWING myself to be underestimated. At Jagex I was just the email girl, bottom rung. People thought of me as ‘silly’, nothing in my head, largely owing to the fact that I’m quite playful and self-deprecating in person.

That’s not paranoia — that’s what I’ve literally been told. And I reckon people who haven’t seen my work probably still have those opinions. But damn do those opinions change fast when I get the chance to do. my. thing. Often accompanied by a look of surprise. *sigh*

It's understandable when a lot of studios just see "narrative" as something you crowbar into a mostly finished game. But I think its importance is being recognised, it's a slow thing but I'm optimistic about the future.

If a game is story based then the narrative designer should be at the heart of the game design and only be limited by technical constraints. The clue is in the label "story based".

Maybe we need to define this term? I know of many games which I would not classify as story games which benefitted from incredible stories. IMO if a game is to have story, a storyteller should be present from the start to ensure that all parts are working cohesively.

I find it tiring, that the only ones defending narrative design are narrative designers (and writers if the company has the luxury to have both). But that's a fight that needs to be had, because good narrative is what separates good games from mediocre ones (among other fields)

My mantra used to be "Ideas are cheap, implementation is everything" I almost said it this past month in a meeting and working at a design-focused studio I realized that doesn't hold water. Everyone produces meaningful work even it its not visible through art or lines of code.

I wouldn’t disagree with that. I’d just be a little more broad with my definition of implementation to include things like designing narrative systems and writing the script itself.
