It's a spectrum, but personally I believe that the e and i in reference to cognitive function has very little to do with social energy, as the terms are more commonly used. So for the purpose of discussion, I'll set sociability aside.
There's also an argument to say that your dominant trait is developed in childhood, your aux in teen years, and that teens and young adults lean more on their newly-aquired aux than their dom.

If that is true, you could feasibly have an extroverted person who first learned Ne/Se/Te/Fe as a child, but gained Ni/Si/Ti/Fi as a teen, and now comes across as more introverted. I also think social anxiety is often mistaken for introversion.

I spent most of my childhood alone, friendless, in my room making up stories. Living in my own world. That was my dominant trait, Ni. When my less prominent Ne side came out, those were the times when I invited others into my world and talked enthusiastically about all my ideas.
