MCV 30 Under 30 2021 
Anyone got any tips for being okay with shitty first drafts? I need to break my habit of endless revision, but I'm seemingly incapable of making progress if I hate what I have so far... which I almost always do.

I need to just get the whole thing down, then I can spend as long as I like later fiddling with it and writing it 'well'. Except that entire concept scares the hell out of me. I'm trying to do it now and I keep finding excuses to... not.

Basically I'm asking for permission to write badly and for reassurance that doing so will not make me a bad writer

everyone's first draft is far far worse than what you end up seeing, your first draft is basically making the clay you go on to sculpt in to something fancy looking. but no clay, no fancy thing. Hello i am bad at analogies.

For real, I think the thing to remember is redrafting is the most satisfying part. That's where you really hone in on your themes and characters, building connections and details.

Just, like, become not only OK with being a worm but REVEL in being a worm! Laugh! Squirm! Pat your little heart! & then rearrange some letters around & SHIT becomes HITS. You can do it as soon as you release your shame & perfectionism (which we all have!) just for a lil while

What are you writing in? I write my first drafts in wordpad, which occupies this awkward middle ground between notepad and word. It's basic as hell, no spelling or grammar tools. Allows me to write something bad before I throw it into a google doc or whatever and make it good.

The wordpad version is for my eyes only and is often formatted so badly that only I could make sense of it anyway. I'll often line break 5 times and start an entirely new thought if that's what strikes me, and figure out where it fits later.

In college we called our first drafts “word vomit.” Just getting it out is all that matters - you can pretty it up later :) What you can do in revisions makes you a good writer

"What you can do in revisions makes you a good writer" - this is what I needed to hear, thank you I just keep telling myself that there's this 'permissible' word vomit which is much better than mine, and that I'm somehow the exception to the rule
