Anyone got any tips for being okay with shitty first drafts? I need to break my habit of endless revision, but I'm seemingly incapable of making progress if I hate what I have so far... which I almost always do.

Because what if everyone who says 'let first drafts be trash' is assuming that your idea of trash is the same as their idea of trash, except their trash is actually okay and your trash is... well... literal garbage

damn... all writers are the same

i want to tell you that the first draft should just be a loose assemblage of parts as a starting point. that nothing in it is sacred. its all sacrificial and should be treated as such. but i also know thats a personal approach. i think for me i (now) see growth in iteration.

which is to say i no longer see iteration as repairing flaws from the previous work, but rather letting things grow, evolve, change. letting things develop.

My instinct is to aim for as few iterations as possible, but that's the very behaviour that's causing me problems. So I'm thinking I should just permit whatever trash I come up with for the time being, except I feel like I need permission to do that
