I need to just get the whole thing down, then I can spend as long as I like later fiddling with it and writing it 'well'. Except that entire concept scares the hell out of me. I'm trying to do it now and I keep finding excuses to... not.

Basically I'm asking for permission to write badly and for reassurance that doing so will not make me a bad writer

Key takeaways: 1. Try handwriting it so that it's harder to edit 2. Try using an editor with bad formatting and no features to fully embrace the chaos 3. "What you can do in revisions makes you a good writer"

I straight up ban myself from touching things until I hit milestones. If its truly, truly atrocious the next page gets the subtitle: "imagine the last page wasnt shit" and then carry on as if it wasnt

for me i really had to adopt the mentality that the first draft is supposed to be flawed, otherwise iteration is impossible. but i'd love to hear other's strats.
-
Just how flawed is acceptable? Because there are days when flawed is passable, just needs a little polish... and there are days when flawed is atrocious and you wonder why the hell you ever thought you could do this. Is one kind of flawed more permissible than the other?

If I'm stuck on a first draft, I find hand-writing it helps overcome the urge to edit as I go along. There's less re-reading and more getting words down, it's a good way to thrash out a structure before working on the detail, and typing up becomes a natural second-drafting stage!
-
Also, trying to remember that first drafts are meant to be bad helps for me. They're supposed to be the point where the bad ideas pop up, to improve on later. To compare with art, the initial linework is barely more than planning, not the finished portrait

I always think of it as bones, and I always let it sit for quite a while before going back in for revisions. Especially if I think I’ll hate it, I’m often surprised by how much I like it.
