This comes 1.5 years after I lost my 12-year-long BFF and went crying to my partner saying that if we ever get married we should have a small wedding because I won't have any guests of my own who would care enough to come

Seriously though, losing was up there amongst the most painful experiences of my life. I didn't know how friendship was supposed to work without My Person. Would it take another 12 years? I've thrown myself into my work, trying not to think about it.

Lost in conflict, growing apart and different, or passed away?

I think a combo of the first two. We definitely changed a lot over the years, living very different lives. But it came to a head last year when we went on holiday together. Long story short, each of us felt very hurt by the other, and attempts to work through it fell flat.
