I just read the news report and... I don’t understand what he said wrong? The article claims he was suspended due to comments on the report, but none of the quotes I saw seemed bad? Have I missed something?

No I don't think you've missed anything. It's just that questioning the narrative, even in the mildest possible terms, is now considered evidence that you're 'Part of The Problem'

But this is a serious issue. The real scale of the problem is simply never quantified in the media, with the ultimate effect that it has been hugely exaggerated in popular perception. This is well documented. Do we not need some metric to gauge the scale of the problem?
