Hard worldbuilding which retains a degree of feasible real-world logic OR soft worldbuilding that trades feasible real-world logic for more symbolic aesthetics? Asking for a personal project.

Hard: normal world where all the cool environmental differences come from the magic system Soft: world tidally locked to the sun in addition to magic system effects, which wouldn’t be habitable IRL but has a cool eternal day/eternal night aspect eternal sunset around the middle

Basically what it comes down to is that I WANT to go soft but am afraid of pedantic internet nerds who would go ‘ummm EXCUSE ME but in the REAL WORLD this wouldn’t make any sense’ even though it’s a god damn fantasy, so thank you Twitter for the validation

As long as you only do one or the other. Don't do a Mass Effect and start hard-ish with really cool hard sci-fi explanations behind why things don't work like star wars, but by the 3rd game end up completely soft and everything just works like it does in star wars.

I had so much fun reading codexes about how the guns adjust the mass of metal microscopic shavings and fire them at really high speeds, and shields adjust the mass of incoming projectiles (but only above a certain speed), and then by Mass Effect 3 everything is firing lasers.

Depends on your goal for the project. In general soft is more easily attuned to emotion centres stories. ( World can act as a metaphor for emotions for example.). Hard can be useful of action/ challenged based stories and ongoing series.

Also I'd consider tone as well. What does the world need to do.
