This thread is applicable to game development generally. A common mistake is designing or writing a game that’s based on how you play or interact. Agreed. I think it also leads to the assumption that if you play lots of games you’ll be able to identify with the players of games. While it’s certainly true that I’ll understand players far better playing games than not, I can’t assume my single play experience is the standard.

Also, we could all pinpoint to a thousand books we find excellent examples of storytelling. Writing one, however, is altogether different. Playing games is not enough to understand how to design or write for them. It’s important but it’s not the only thing needed.
