For Mountain Goats, my favourite songs are on All Eternals Deck, Get Lonely, Heretic Pride, Tallahassee and Zopilote Machine. I also recommend Hadestown, both the concept album by Anais Mitchell and the live performances from the musical.

Silver Moons is a fabulous place to start on that album, especially if you're looking for sad. He's got a great voice. Other highlights are Idiot Heart and Nightingale/December Song (though they're not sad).
