Let's talk canon death. If you mess up a level, or get an NPC killed, would you like the game to consider that canon, like, say, in Detroit: Become Human, or force you to replay, like in, say, Ghost of Tsushima? 1/2

I'm very interested in the current disparity between these two poll results. Perhaps different people are voting on each one, perhaps some people are only voting on one poll and not the other. But it makes me wonder... Do we like the idea of canon failure more than the reality?

Or, more likely, does it entirely depend on our attitude to choices and consequences in narrative? Our bias, as writers, towards certain choices, or our having a success/fail approach rather than a different path approach?

Are we offering players the wrong things, trying to catch them out and presumptuously teach them our ethics? Are we giving them the opportunity to do things we ourselves find reprehensible, only to say "Gotcha! I knew you were an asshole! Now look what you get!"

I've made that mistake in my writing before. And I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound like a fun experience, nor one that celebrates choice.

i'm for sure a 'see where it goes', because otherwise i feel like i'm cheating myself out of an authentic first experience of the game? unless i explicitly know it will lead to a bad ending, while something like detroit is still a bad ending, but it's part of the game

although it also hugely depends on the context of the character, type of game, etc. because my answer can change drastically depending on context

I remember playing Knights in the Nightmare. A weird Atlas rpg/roguelike/bullet hell thing on 3DS. There was friendly NPC permadeath. For a while, I kept reloading the game whenever that happened but after a while I hated the effect so much I stopped playing.

I think some people really like it (more systems based players?) and other people (me!) hate it so much. When it's canon and unavoidable, I kind of love it? My partner played FFVII for the first time in 2017 and watching them pour time, effort and love in Aerith was fascinating.

So I always approach games like this with a "canon run" where any successes and mistakes I make are done blind, without fully understanding the consequences until another playthrough where I'll restart if I fail.

Depends on my feelings about the NPC. If it's someone I liked and feel it would be a shame to lose, I'll replay. If they're less impactful, play on and see what happens.
